JW Promotions have just confirmed Phil Coulter for concerts in

Regarded as a doyen of the music industry, Phil Coulter has not only weathered just about every change in the business, he has been one of the few songwriters who actually shaped pop history by dictating musical taste and fashions.

Van Morrison once famously described Phil Coulter as Cool Filter. He was right. Phil's music carries the stamp of a master performer, arranger and composer. Ireland's most acclaimed and biggest selling pianist ever.

After “WINTER’S CROSSING” I returned to the studios, not as a performer this time but as a producer for a fascinating project called “Romantic Themes and Celtic Dreams” (RCA Victor 09026 633622). It was inspired by the piano music of perhaps Ireland’s most influential classical composer JOHN FIELD, who invented ‘the Nocturne,’ a form taken up and perfected by CHOPIN. We revisited these beautiful nocturnes of Field’s and gave them a contemporary Celtic backdrop. The album featured one of the most stunning young pianists in Ireland - ALISON HOOD. It’s a superb CD and has had rave reviews on both sides of the Atlantic. Check it out!

My latest project is a very unique album, which I’m delighted to say went straight to Number 7 in the BILLBOARD NEW AGE CHART, on the first week of release. It is a concept I dreamed up last year and I’m very excited about it.

It’s called “HEALING ANGEL” (RCA Victor 09026 63551-2) and is a collaboration with ROMA DOWNEY star of the record breaking T.V. series ‘TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL’ I have translated and adapted some old Celtic blessings and words of wisdom, and written some of my own, on subjects like Love, Loss, Faith, Family etc., which are important to all of us. Roma speaks the words in her unmistakable lilting voice (with that DERRY accent we both know so well since it is her hometown also). The words sit beautifully on top of the music that I’ve composed specially for each track. As ROMA says, “It’s as if the words and the music are dancing with each other.” We’re both very proud of the album and we’re hoping that you out there like it as much as we do.

I finished off 1999 by completing my new album, my first solo release in four years and my debut for RCA Victor. It’s called HIGHLAND CATHEDRAL and it will be in the stores in late February.

It marks quite a development for me and I’m really excited about it. I suppose it takes us further along the New Age road in terms of the soundscapes and the moods, but I feel it has an obvious Coulter style to it, most particularly in the melodies.

I am very melody driven, both as a writer and performer, and this album has a great range of strong tunes, from existing classics like FLOW GENTLY SWEET AFTON or THE SKYE BOAT SONG to newer pieces like HIGHLAND CATHEDRAL, which has become amazingly popular since it was featured in the movie ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral!’ I composed most of the tracks specially for the project and I’m immensely pleased with the way they’ve turned out. I think it’s a great mix.

DIFFERENT DRUMS OF IRELAND provide some hypnotic percussion rhythm, and there are four vocal tracks featuring the heavenly voice of AOIFE who comes from the same small village in Donegal as ENYA and MAIRE BRENNAN and who featured on some my earlier projects. Keep your eye out for HIGHLAND CATHEDRAL.
